PROTECT OUR LAKE:

The lake was lowered for tower repair October 2024.

The Board has purchased a lake/pond surface skimmer. All members may  check it out at the office and use it to remove duckweed/algae. The  skimmer may be tossed from the shoreline or pulled behind a boat. The  Board would appreciate all feedback as to the effectiveness and ease of  use

  *  Remember to check your chlorine in your septic discharge.  Members are required to make sure chlorine tablets are in their discharge at all times.

* Keep your leaves cleaned up.  After Thanksgiving weekend, lots will be checked.  If there has been no attempt to clean up leaves a fine will be issued, and violators will have 30 days to clean up leaves.  If the Lake has to clean up leaves on a leasehold you will be charged a second fine and charged $100 Per Hour for cleanup.

 * Walleye must be 15” or longer to be kept with a limit of 3 per person per day.  Any Walleye less than 15” in length must be released back to the lake.

**The Board is looking for members to step up and form a Booster Club. People  interested in fundraising for the annual fireworks and/or additional enhancements to the lake should join the Booster Club. If you are interested please call the office.

ABOUT SUNSET LAKE, GIRARD ILLINOIS

The Lake

Sunset Lake is located 3 1/2 miles west of Girard, IL.  Our lake is a 173-acres of pristine waters to enjoy fishing, boating, swimming, skiing and tubing.

July 29, 1954 the Girard Community Lake Association, consisting of,  George Kemp, Harry Wallace, Ray Krebaum, James Coultas, Verner Hunt, Orval Lomelino, Owen Foster, Charles Gibbel, M. G Miller, S. O. Smith Jr organized and began to construct a lake to establish recreational facilities and to promote the conservation of wild game and fish-life by the members.  On August 29, 1955 the name was changed to Sunset Lake Association.  The association maintains approximately 10 miles of private roads around the lake.  All land is owned by the Association and leased to the members on a 99 year lease.

Hanauer Hall

The Association maintains a community center, consisting of the Office and Hanauer Hall in addition to a garage.  A Firehouse manned by Girard Volunteer Fire Department was constructed in 2010 by the Association.  Hanauer Hall was dedicated to Robert Hanauer (pictured to the right), without whom, there wouldn't be a Community Center.  Hanauer worked tirelessly to move the Association office from the town square in Girard to Association property.  His love and dedication to the Sunset Lake Association was honored by the dedication of the community hall being named after him.
